These
are usually prescribed and fitted by a Lymphoedema clinic or hospital surgical
appliances department. They should be worn indefinitely, during the times when
the sufferer is out of bed (although at certain times, such as immediately following
a course of CDT, it is often advised that they also be worn over-night). By
themselves, compression garments may not always reduce limb size - however,
they maintain the size of a limb. Such garments need to be washed regularly
and new ones obtained at regular intervals (each 4-6 months is usually recommended)
to enable the compression to work effectively.
